Our CATS terminal has one of the lowest carbon intensities of all gas processing facilities in the UK and our energy efficiency projects, including a heat integration project, will help reduce our emissions even further over the coming years.
We are committed to providing accurate and transparent emissions data including fugitive methane emissions, and have partnered with Project Canary to install methane sensors around the CATS terminal that continuously monitor methane emissions.
The Tolmount platform, part of HGS, is powered by a gas micro turbine which reduces emissions versus traditional diesel-powered generation.
Zero environmental spills recorded since 1993
All waste is recycled, reused or recovered
Imported electricity comes only from renewable sources
Turbo expander produces most of our terminal’s energy
We are passionate about protecting the natural environment and fostering biodiversity in the communities where we operate, with ongoing initiatives that promote ecological balance and conservation. Working with environmental organisations at our CATS facility, we have established a thriving colony of Small Blue butterflies, recorded multiple new species of moth and nurtured diversity of flora and fauna around the terminal, and we host hives of honeybees.
Our aim to send zero waste to landfill is achieved through collaborating with waste management services that strive to ensure that landfill is the last resort for our waste streams. In addition, we avoid single use plastics wherever possible and encourage recycling practices in our offices.
Kellas carbon and energy intensities have remained flat over the last few years in spite of a significant increase in throughput in 2019. Efficient operations at the CATS terminal have resulted in a stable energy intensity and carbon intensity figure for the last two years.
CATS has one of the lowest carbon intensities of all gas processing facilities in the UK with at least 60% of the electricity requirement being generated onsite from “waste” process energy, the remaining 40% being imported via the national grid, from entirely renewable sources.
Implementing the energy efficiency and emissions reduction projects identified in 2020 will enable us to further reduce carbon intensity.
